Chapter 7. Comparisons

Fontmatrix provides two ways to compare fonts: by comparing lines of text in the Playground tab and by comparing standalone glyphs in the Compare tab.

Comparison of fonts

Adding fonts for comparison

  1. In Browse Fonts, click on the font you want to add.

  2. Pick a font size of interest.

  3. Click anywhere on the canvas — a text cursor flashes where your text will start.

  4. Type some text.

  5. Click on another font in the sidebar to add another line.

  6. Repeat steps 1–5 until done.

Comparing fonts

The Playground uses a huge zoomable canvas where you can drag text lines around, regroup them and pan. Unlike Sample Text, the playground always uses Qt's native font rendering engine, so you can zoom freely without seeing pixel blocks.

Hover over a text line to see a tooltip with the font name and file location. Drag a line to move it; Ctrl+click or rubber-band to select several lines and move them together. Press Esc to clear the selection.

Press the middle mouse button to pan; Ctrl+wheel to zoom.

Cleaning the playground

To remove existing text lines, select them and press Delete.
